What is radon?
Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that forms naturally as uranium breaks down in soil and rock. It seeps through foundation cracks, sump pits, crawlspace floors, and construction joints, then collects in your home. You cannot smell it, taste it, or see it. The EPA action level is 4.0 pCi/L. At that level, living in your home is the equivalent of smoking 10 cigarettes a day. The only way to know your level is to test - and across Loudoun, Fauquier, and Rappahannock counties, elevated readings are common.
How a radon mitigation system works
A sub-slab depressurization (SSD) system is the most effective and durable solution. A small hole is drilled through your slab or crawlspace floor. A dedicated radon fan draws gas up through PVC pipe, exhausting it safely above the roofline. The system runs continuously - most homes reach well below the EPA action level within a few days. Works for basements, crawlspaces, and slab-on-grade foundations.
What to expect
Most jobs take 3 to 4 hours. You can be home. Jonny walks you through how the system works before he leaves. A small area of your basement or crawlspace needs to be clear around the suction point. There is no reconstruction required. If you have not tested yet, Jonny can refer you to a licensed local tester.
